Questions to ask before committing to voltage optimisation
The strongest VO projects begin with the right questions. These answers explain what can be known early, what must be measured and what should be agreed in the project documents.
How much energy will our site save?
There is no responsible universal percentage. The estimate depends on voltage headroom, the voltage-dependent share of load, operating hours, control strategy and losses. EMSCAP develops a site-specific estimate with assumptions, sensitivity and a proposed verification method.
How do you determine whether a site is suitable?
We review voltage by phase and time, load composition, minimum-voltage requirements, electrical interfaces, critical loads, power quality, generation and operating plans. The outcome may be proceed, investigate further or do not proceed.
What is the difference between fixed and dynamic VO?
A fixed system applies a substantially consistent reduction, so output follows input variation. A dynamic system regulates output toward an engineered target or band. Selection depends on the measured voltage profile and site constraints.
Will VO affect machinery or critical equipment?
The design must maintain equipment within its permitted supply range and preserve starting, control and protection performance. Sensitive and remote loads are identified during assessment and tested during commissioning.
Does VO improve power quality?
It can manage sustained voltage and, depending on topology, may influence selected power-quality measures. It should not be assumed to replace surge protection, harmonic filtering, power-factor correction or other dedicated solutions.
Does VO reduce EV charging energy?
Usually not. Modern chargers regulate power electronically. VO may support a broader capacity strategy by reducing voltage-responsive existing building load, subject to measurement and minimum-voltage constraints.
How does VO work with solar PV or batteries?
The connection point, power-flow direction, voltage modes, inverter settings, metering and controls must be assessed together. VO addresses voltage presented to selected loads; it does not create renewable generation.
How are savings verified?
The project agrees the boundary, baseline, meters, variables, adjustments, test method, reporting period and uncertainty before installation. Methods may include controlled tests, interval modelling or engineering calculations, depending on the decision.
Can the project support NABERS or climate reporting?
Verified energy performance may contribute to an organisation's rating or reporting workflow. The applicable NABERS rules, emissions factors, reporting boundary and assurance process remain separate requirements.
How disruptive is installation?
Disruption depends on the electrical boundary and site arrangement. The delivery plan defines outage windows, temporary arrangements, access, permits, switching, rollback conditions and stakeholder communications.
What happens if the optimiser is unavailable?
The design includes an agreed bypass and isolation philosophy. Operating modes, interlocks, alarms, fail states and switching responsibilities are documented and tested.
What maintenance is required?
Maintenance depends on the selected equipment, environment, duty and service model. The proposal should state inspection, servicing, response, spare-parts, warranty and responsibility arrangements rather than relying on a generic 'maintenance-free' claim.
Are savings guaranteed?
A guarantee is a contractual term, not a general product characteristic. Where offered, it must define the baseline, method, exclusions, operating obligations, shortfall treatment and responsible entity.
Does EMSCAP support multiple sites?
Yes, subject to scope and current delivery coverage. A portfolio programme should standardise data, assessment, engineering and governance while retaining site-specific suitability and savings decisions.
What is the first step?
Request an initial discussion or site assessment. Provide recent electricity data, operating hours, single-line information, major loads, known voltage issues, generation/storage and planned changes where available.
